Royston has a proud industrial heritage. In 1818, Samuel Courtauld established Townsford Mill on the River Colne, beginning a silk manufacturing tradition that would define the town for over a century. The black crepe for Queen Victoria's funeral in 1901 was woven right here in Royston.
